Scoring or Fatiguing

Weakening the arm or handle of a spoon before a performance is an important way to limit the number of times you must physically manipulate it in front of a spectator if you want to end a spoon bending routine with a “flick break” or “Bowl Drop”, which creates the illusion that the end is just melting off. You should always score one utensil if at all possible, before you perform. To do so, simply grip the spoon between your hands—the bowl in your left hand and the arm in your right. Bring your hands together and bend it in half, then back, and repeat. Try to stay close to the bowl at the top of the arm. If you do it fast enough, it will start to get pretty hot—so be careful. However, don’t do it too many times, or it may break without any effort at all. Done right, it will still be strong enough to smack it flat against a table or your hand as a convincer a couple times without any problem.
